Welcome to the enchanting winter wonderland of Helsinki, where Christmas magic fills the air and cozy traditions warm your heart. From traditional Christmas markets to toasty saunas and delightful pastries, here's your guide to experiencing the most magical season in the Finnish capital.

1. Christmas Markets

Start your festive journey by exploring the charming Christmas markets in Helsinki. The most famous one is the Helsinki Christmas Market at Senate Square, where you'll find a dazzling array of handmade crafts, delicious Finnish treats, and heartwarming mulled wine (glögi). Drink a warm cup of glögi, have roasted chestnuts, ride the carousel with your children and explore the little stalls. Other markets, like the Tuomaan Markkinat and Korjaamo Christmas Market, offer unique gifts and culinary delights.Wander through the city streets to admire the enchanting Christmas lights that adorn the buildings and trees, creating a captivating winter atmosphere. The Esplanadi Park is particularly beautiful during this time.

During the Christmas season in Helsinki, you can immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere by visiting some of the city's stunning churches and enjoying heartwarming Christmas concerts. Iconic places of worship like the Helsinki Cathedral, Johanneksen Church  and the Uspenski Cathedral often host special holiday events, including candlelit services and concerts that resonate with the spirit of the season. In addition to these prominent landmarks, many local churches throughout the city, such as the Kallio Church and the Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church), also offer festive concerts that feature traditional Finnish Christmas hymns and melodies, making it a magical experience for locals and visitors alike.

2. Sauna Bliss at Löyly

Escape the winter chill and immerse yourself in a quintessential Finnish experience at Löyly, a public sauna located by the sea. Allas Sea pool is another great option that is located in the center of town. Bask in the warmth of the saunas and take a refreshing dip in the icy Baltic Sea. It's a relaxing and revitalizing way to enjoy the holiday season. Afterward, enjoy a hot drink or cozy up by the fire in their lounge. Allas sea pool is another great option for a dip, right in the center of Helsinki.

3. Cinnamon Roll Delights & Coffee

Finnish coffee culture is a cherished tradition, and in the heart of Helsinki, you'll find a wealth of cozy cafes and inviting spaces to savor a cup of coffee. Whether you're in search of a quiet corner for contemplation or a bustling spot to enjoy the buzz of the city, Helsinki offers a delightful array of coffee houses where you can indulge in this beloved Finnish ritual. In Finland, cinnamon rolls are a Christmas staple. Warm your soul with a freshly baked cinnamon roll. Café Regatta, is a delightful option, offering a picturesque view of the sea and a cozy, rustic atmosphere. Other cosy cafes include cafe esplanad, the market hall (kauppahalli), cafe Ekberg or Café Succès located on Korkeavuorenkatu. Speaking of Korkeavuorenkatu, walk down this road and explore the Design museum or visit fasaani- the second hand shop where you can find all kinds of Finnish treasures to take home with you. This happens to be one of my favorite streets in Helsinki, that is decorated beautifully during the winter season. If you love coffee like most Finns do, grab a takeaway Latte at Roberts coffee and if you do so before 11am, it will be half off. Visit Akateeminen (a book store in the center of Helsinki) and shop for sweet Christmas books while stopping in the Aalto cafe (located on the second floor) for a little pastry treat.
